It's the right season and you are all friends so allow this bit of self-indulgence.

This morning Maya woke up and went into the bedroom where I sleep. Not one to just sit around doing nothing, but not wanting to make me get up, she announced that she was going to draw. But what? "What should I draw? I will draw the New Yorker logo."

Yeah! Good idea Maya.

After considering the issue, she delved into the task and produced an outline. I was still pondering the issue of whether to get up, so she announced that she was going to color it.

"Do you think I should color it?"

"Good idea, Maya."

Below is the result.

What next? I obviously I did not get it, so after a few moments of silence, she hands me the note below.

And that's how I got up this morning- with a purpose, courtesy of Maya.

Two recent deaths warranted face to face entries in my journal. I pasted a picture of Christopher Hitchens, who died of cancer late Thursday night, and then decided to do a quick sketch instead. Today, when I heard that Cesaria Evora died, I decided to just do a two minute sketch straight out. They both made me think of Elsa. Hitchens because his public facing of cancer, reminded me of the same courage and fighting spirit Elsa displayed when engaging the same war; Cesaria because I remembered when Elsa interviewed her in Macau for TDM (Televisão De Macau).

I have been practicing sketching quickly. These two are from last week. They were done at the Student Center at Northeastern. I usually go there to eat something before going to class.

Today, I made some on the subway train. Boston subway trains are quite old and rattle something fierce, ergo, the squiggly lines.

This women was sitting one seat away from me. She obviously feels the same way I feel about the cold, although it was not cold at all inside the train.

This one was sitting far away. I could not really make out his features.

This man was sitting across from me. I took more time with this one (about 3 minutes) than with the other two (30 seconds).

Trip to New York Dec 2009

We went to New York for Elsa's doctor visit. We left Massachusetts at 4:30 in the morning and drove to Manhattan. When we got there, the first thing we did was eat breakfast at a Pret-a-Manger.

We then went to the lobby at MSKCC and some of us caught some ZZZZZ's.

After the doctor, we had Korean barbeque for lunch.

They gave us sweet potato ice cream for dessert.
